Toshiba Portege G910 Review

In a world that’s becoming overly full of convergence devices, it’s nice that we at least have an option in which we choose to use for ourselves. To that end, we have the Toshiba Portege G910. This device is capable of doing pretty much everything, and well too. Like others in this series of smartphone, the G910 is a Windows Mobile device and comes complete with the Office Mobile suite of productivity utilities, including email functions. There is also a biometric fingerprint sensor for security and real time GPS navigational abilities.

Form Factor: The G910 is 117mm x 64mm x 19.8mm and weighs 183 grams. It has a clamshell design, meaning that it flips up and acts for all intents and purposes as a mini laptop. The QWERTY keyboard has about as much functionality as a normal full sized keyboard, including the directional keys, control, tab, space and shift. It even has that Windows button (the one with the Windows logo on it).

There are of course two screens, the inside one and the outside one. The outside one is used as a normal cell phone window, the inside one is the 3 inch 800 x 400 resolution touch screen. There is also a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus on the back of the unit.

Memory, Network and Communications: The G910 has 60 MB of RAM and 128 MB of flash storage which can be increased with microSD cards. Through the microSD cards the available space can currently be increased up to 32 GB. This is very useful if you like to take everything possible on the go with you. This Portege can operate on HSDPA, GSM, EDGE and GPRS networks. The G910 also comes with built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There is also VoIP calling features through the Wi-Fi connection. Of course there is a USB connection as well.

Features, Functionality and Multimedia: The G910 comes fully equipped with an immense amount of features. To start, this is a Window’s Mobile device, so it comes with the mobile versions of Office and Outlook for email (including push email). There is also SMS and MMS for traditional messaging, and Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging.

GPS is built into this unit, and most agree that it works well as a standalone navigational device.

As far as multimedia, the G910 has the ability to play media files through the mobile version of the Windows Media Player. It can play MP3, AAC and WMA audio files, and WMV, 3GP and MP4 video files.

Basic features such as Address Book and Calendar etc. are also here, so no need to worry that this smartphone is all feature with no real personal usage. And last but not least, let’s not forget that this is a mobile phone as well.

The G910 is a fully functional smartphone device, but let’s not forget it’s also a “phone”. It also is a convergence device that delivers on everything that it promises. Entry level users can easily pick one up and use it, but advanced smartphone users will find a lot they could do with this device.
